Lesson of the Day

Hey ya'll,

Today was a prime example of why some years ago I made a conscious decsion to avoid the perception of the lowest prices from the big box home improvement stores.  I won't mention any names but their initials are "The Home Depot" and my absolute favorite, you guessed it, "Menards".  To make a long story short stick with the friendly, local, knowledgeable, trustworthy, good old lumber yard your dad or grandpa took you to for lumber and building supplies when you were a kid.  If you want a bag of chips stop at Menards.  If you want straight, quality lumber and you're in the Wausau area stop at Modern Builders and Suppliers.  If you are anywhere else don't be so quick to pass up the lumber yard.  They are not all great but in my experience in construction I have found them to far surpass any sort of "help" you might find at the big stores.  That being said do not be tempted by the "but it was cheaper" excuse.  Chances are if you are paying less you are getting less. By the way I checked with various local window manufacturers and the big boxes and found the best windows at the lowest prices right at the lumber yard.
Thanks to Norb at Modern and his years (we won't say how many) of experience with our turn of the century farm house renovation.

In my experience of tearing out the plaster and flooring this evening with my wife I realized she may not like to pull out nails but she sure is good company.

So if you caught yesterday's blog, you'll be able to compare the downstairs bathroom picture with the following:

Jay FINALLY packing up his towel, shampoo and soap and saying "sayonara" to where his tub was. (He was the only one left still using it.  The rest of us were already using the camper shower.)

Bathroom downstairs, all gutted out!  It really only took us a few hours.  This size room went pretty fast.  As you can see, the original window opening was much larger.  Now considering going with the original size.  Decisions!

Same room, different angle.  Looking in from the northeast side of the house.

Bye-Bye tub and sink!

The last couple of pictures show our mini helpers, Carter & Carlee.
Carter gathered up this wood for our campfire.  I'm not so sure how he made it this far without it all tipping over.....OH YEAH, that's right....Daddy was hanging onto it....lol.

Demolition girl with a drill! Yes, the battery was charged, but thankfully she doesn't have the strength to really do anything.

Jay actually wants to add to the blog today, so I left a little bit out of what occurred earlier to our trip to Wausau.  Therefore, the next post you probably read will be from him.  :-)

The old bathroom downstairs is also getting remodeled.  Here are just a few pictures demo pictures.

Taking out the last part of the vanity from the downstairs bathroom.

Won't be long and this will be a goner too.

Starting to pull up the floor.....

What's under there?

Oh, it's just this pretty linoleum that was under the current linoleum.  Keith Paul, do you remember this at all before your family's remodel?

This floor was in desperate need of help.  It was rotting badly!

Onto tomorrow....I think the kids will have lights in their rooms by then.  I picked up the fixtures today.

Today, Chris and Mark with Central Wisconsin Heating were here working through this hot and humid weather.  They completed some more rough in plumbing and more electrical work. See some pictures below.

Chris working in the bathroom while Mark is in the laundry room area.

Chris

This will be SO nice to have a wall heater in our bathroom.

Both Carlee and Carter will have ceiling lights in their rooms very soon.  Yay!

Rough in plumbing for the bathtub.

Water line in for the toilet.

Waterlines and drainage ready for the bathroom sink.

Was told that it won't be long before the drywall can get installed.  Can't wait!

June 26, 2012

Today, Jay picked up our pocket door from Modern Builders & Suppliers and it's gorgeous!  Thank you Norb!  We are extremely happy with it.  Just below you can see where Jay moved, widened, and installed a header (as it is a load bearing wall) to our door way to the laundry room.  I guess there should have been one there all along, but there wasn't previously.

In this picture, you can see where the chimney used to be (patched up with plywood).  This is the future home of our washer & dryer.  Boy, I can't wait for that!

We also picked up our vanity and mirror today also.  It doesn't look like much was done, but it's more work than one may think (like me).  Baby steps and we'll get there.  :-)

I'm Officially Caught Up!

June 24, 2012

Today, there was some more work done in the basement (those unseen things that are extremely important) as well as more demolition in the main level bathroom.

The first two pictures are of Jay preparing to jack up the floor.

Bye-bye to the shower unit surrounding our tub in the downstairs bathroom.  Thank goodness we have the camper we're staying in!

There it goes!

A view into the downstairs bathroom, from the northeast room.  The tub will be next!  Our plans here for this bathroom is turning it into a 3/4 bathroom.  Just a stool, sink and shower unit only.
So what do you think?  It's been a crazy summer so far...that's for sure.  This is the only summer I wish would fly by because then I'd be done with the majority of this project.
I think this house is thanking us for all the weight we've taken off of it.

Field Stone Wall in Basement Gone

June 19, 2012

Quite a day this way for these men!  Robert Ross Construction came into our basement and removed the field stone foundation wall that runs through the center of our home.  I watched that morning as vehicle after vehicle was coming in.  My guess is that there were 8 men here that hot 90 degree day. Poor guys!  One plus though, was that is WAS cooler in the basement.  A few guys also came back the following day and helped Jay with installing the steel beam and posts to replace that wall.  What a great crew!

Check out the video of these guys working hard.

Boy did that ever open it up down there.

You can see how thick that field stone wall was here in this picture.

Ready for some more demo?  Jay is getting ready to open up this door way a little more.  From this angle, this doorway is the one coming from the front entry into the kitchen area.

Here we go!

Look at that!  Wow!  Such a difference.
The picture below shows how the door way looked before we moved in.

Jay lining up to assure the beam is straight.

Well, I think I'm all caught up except for what has been today.  I'll try to get that one going soon. :-)
